This Rococo revival mantel clock dates from 1890 and is attributed to Valery of Paris. The case is constructed from boulle marquetry over mother-of-pearl with tortoiseshell, complemented by heavy gilt brass and ormolu mounts, blue Roman numerals on white enamel cartouches, and blued steel hands. Notable details include scrolling foliate mounts, curved bracket feet, a figural cherub finial seated atop the dome, and a glazed lower glass panel revealing the pendulum. Measuring 41 cm in height, 23 cm in width, and 13 cm in depth, the clock incorporates an eight-day duration mechanism striking on a bell. It is designed to stand prominently upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or occasional table in a living room, study, or drawing room.

A Boulle mantel clock is an ornate table clock decorated with marquetry using cut brass inlaid into tortoiseshell or horn, a technique perfected by French cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle during the seventeenth century.

These clocks typically feature brass inlay set within brass-chased tortoiseshell or horn cases, accented with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and enamel dial cartouches.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit hand-chased brass mounts, fine fretwork cutouts, mechanical brass pendulum movements with maker stamps, and individual ceramic or enamel numeral cartouches.

Display the clock as a focal piece on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a central library shelf to contrast with clean architectural lines.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the organic shell from drying or lifting, dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid chemical polishes.
