19th century
For Sale by FB Antiques
Description

Late Victorian Chinese Chippendale Style Mahogany Display Cabinet

Item Code: S27-82

A striking late 19th century mahogany display cabinet in the Chinese Chippendale taste, circa 1880, of highly decorative and architectural form.

The upper section is enclosed by a pair of glazed doors, each incorporating finely carved and pierced decorative glazing bars with scrolling and Oriental-inspired detailing. The doors open to reveal a fabric-lined display interior fitted with three adjustable shelves, allowing the internal arrangement to be altered to suit a variety of objects.

Above, the cabinet is surmounted by an elaborate pierced and carved gallery with sweeping scrollwork, urn finials and a bold central foliate crest. Further decorative carving runs beneath the cornice, adding to the richly detailed appearance.

The lower section is equally impressive, with a shaped and moulded apron centred by a carved foliate motif. The cabinet is raised on four square supports enriched with carved lattice panels and flowerhead decoration, with pierced corner brackets beneath the apron. The legs are united by an elaborate scrolling stretcher centred by a small rectangular platform.

A particularly decorative example of the late Victorian revival of the Chinese Chippendale style, combining practical display space with an impressive and highly ornamental design. Ideal for displaying porcelain, glass, silver, collectibles or objets d’art.

This late Victorian display cabinet exemplifies the Chinese Chippendale revival style of the late 19th century, rendered in warm brown mahogany with a smooth timber finish and clear glass panels. The upper architectural section features a pierced pediment topped with urn finials, a bold central foliate crest, and a pair of glazed doors enclosing a fabric-lined interior with adjustable shelving. Below, the table base has a shaped, moulded apron centred on a carved foliate motif, supported by four square legs decorated with blind fretwork lattice panels, carved spandrels, and turned block feet united by a scrolled stretcher with a central platform. The piece stands 238 cm high, 132 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. In a modern interior, this cabinet provides refined storage and display space in a drawing room, hallway, or dining room for collections of porcelain, glassware, silver, and objets d'art. The structural framework shows authentic antique wear, marks, and minor imperfections consistent with age and use, maintaining its decorative character while remaining fully functional for everyday domestic settings.

Emerging in the mid-18th century and widely revived during the late Victorian era, Chinese Chippendale furniture incorporates East Asian decorative motifs, intricate lattice fretwork, pagoda-inspired crestings, and blind fret carving into traditional English mahogany cabinetmaking.

Craftspeople predominantly utilised solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers, featuring hand-carved decorative elements, blind fretwork, clear glass glazing, and solid brass hardware.

Authentic late Victorian pieces display precision joinery such as machine-assisted dovetailed joints, crisp hand-carved blind fretwork on the legs, pierced scroll pediments, and glass panels secured with traditional timber glazing bars.

Position the cabinet against a neutral or rich wall colour in a dining room, hallway, or living space, using its glazed shelves to display curated ceramics, glassware, or contemporary art objects to create visual contrast.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish fading.
