French Rouge Marble and Bronze Mounted Mantel Clock, Circa 1870

19th century
Description

A French rouge marble mantel clock dating from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1870.

The architectural case is constructed in richly figured rouge marble, with a stepped base and pedimented top, flanked by a pair of classical fluted columns with decorative Corinthian-style capitals.

The upper section incorporates a finely cast bronze relief panel depicting a classical scene with figures and a horse-drawn chariot, providing an attractive decorative detail to the otherwise restrained architectural design.

The circular gilt dial is set behind a glazed brass bezel and features individual Roman numeral hour cartouches, with twin winding apertures. The eight-day movement strikes the hours on a coiled gong and is accessed through a glazed hinged door to the rear.

A particularly decorative example, combining strongly figured rouge marble with classical architectural and bronze detailing.

French, circa 1870.

Originating in France around 1870 during the Second Empire period, this mantel clock is an architectural timepiece constructed from mottled red rouge marble. The substantial case stands upon a stepped plinth base, supporting a pedimented top crowned with a stepped finial shape. Two fluted columns with Corinthian capitals flank the central circular gilt brass dial, which displays individual Roman numeral cartouches and twin winding apertures behind a glazed bezel. Above the dial, an inset bronze relief panel depicts a classical chariot scene. Patination and tonal variations mark the mottled stone surface, while the dial face shows some surface wear and age spots. Measuring 33 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the clock suits placement upon a traditional mantelpiece, a living room sideboard, or a library table. It brings classical French Chateau style to interior settings, operating as a functional timepiece and decorative accent in a reception room or study.

French rouge marble mantel clocks gained widespread popularity during the Second Empire and late 19th-century period. Crafted as decorative timepieces for suburban townhouses and country estates, these clocks combined mechanical precision with classical architectural forms influenced by Greek and Roman revivals.

These clocks are predominantly constructed using quarried marble, such as variegated Rouge Griotte or Rouge Languedoc, alongside cast bronze or brass for decorative mounts, dial bezels, and column capitals. The internal movements typically consist of brass plates, steel arbors, and pendulum mechanisms.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut marble slabs with visible pin-joint assembly, heavy cast bronze mounts showing hand-chased detailing, and stamped French clockmaker movements on the back plate, often displaying medallions from Parisian horologists or foundry marks.

A marble clock functions as a focal anchor when placed atop a minimalist fireplace mantelpiece or modern wooden sideboard. Pairing the rich terracotta tones of rouge marble against neutral plaster walls or dark moody paint palettes balances heritage craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.

Dust marble surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and avoid acid-based cleaners that etch natural stone. Bronze mounts should be kept free from moisture to prevent unwanted oxidisation, while the mechanical movement requires professional oiling and servicing by a horologist every five to seven years.
