This pair of antique French faience vases dates from 1920 in the Art Nouveau style. The glazed earthenware bodies take a tapering baluster form with flared rims and display an olive green and turquoise gradient finish, painted with purple poppy flowers and sinuous trailing stems. Details include lightly potted forms, impressed numbers on the bases, and a hand-painted floral decoration that wraps around the entire body. Each vase measures 43 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. They are suitable for display on a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or dining area to hold fresh or dried stems, or as decorative objects on a console table or sideboard.

FAQs

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French Art Nouveau faience combines traditional tin-glazed earthenware with naturalistic, flowing organic motifs inspired by flora and fauna.

Faience is created by coating earthenware clay in an opaque white tin glaze, which is then painted with metal oxides before firing to achieve vibrant, glossy surface finishes.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted sinuous lines, stylized floral motifs, maker marks or impressed numbers on the base, and characteristic age-related glaze crazing.

Position a pair of floral ceramic vases on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to create a balanced focal point that brings natural forms into contemporary spaces.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and lukewarm water mixed with mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or full submersion to protect delicate glazes and earthenware bodies.
