This collection of six antique Japanese Kutani vases dates from the Meiji period in 1900. Made from porcelain with enamel and gold leaf, the pieces display a vibrant mix of terracotta, red, gold, white and brown colours. The assortment comprises two pairs of bottle shaped vases and two singular vessels, featuring intricate hand-painted motifs of flowers, birds, leaves, trees and human figures accented by iron-red enamelling and gilded highlights across the surfaces. Measuring 21 cm high, 10 cm wide and 10 cm deep, these versatile vessels suit placement upon a sideboard top in a living room, dining room or hallway. The maximalist wonderland design integrates easily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes as decorative display accents.

FAQs

Kutani porcelain originates from the Ishikawa prefecture in Japan, recognised for overglaze enamels, iron-red detailing, and gold gilding introduced extensively during the Meiji period.

Kutani ceramics feature a hard-paste porcelain body decorated with overglaze pigments, predominantly iron-red enamel, combined with gold leaf application.

Authentic pieces usually display hand-painted character marks on the base, detailed iron-red enamel patterns, and surface wear consistent with age.

Grouping a collection of varied vase shapes together on a sideboard or mantelpiece creates a cohesive decorative display highlighting warm terracotta tones.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or submersion in water that could damage fragile surface gilding.
