Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This nineteenth-century carriage clock stands as a refined example of French horology, designed in a classic architectural form for a gentleman's library or mantelpiece. The piece consists of a rectangular gilt brass case richly decorated with intricate foliate engraving across the front bezel and base moulding, enclosing clear bevelled glass panels that reveal the mechanical movement within. At the top sits a sturdy folding rectangular handle secured by two small spherical mounts, while the top panel of the case is glazed to expose the escapement. The white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals and delicate hands, set against a gilded mask with matching floral and scroll ornamentation. Through the side glass panel, internal brass gears, pillars, and a steel lever mechanism remain fully visible. Measuring 15 cm in height including the handle, the clock combines portable function with ornate decorative metalwork. Placing this clock on a mantelpiece, a desk, or a bookshelf brings traditional nineteenth-century craftsmanship into a contemporary home. The warm golden tones of the gilt brass complement wood-panelled walls, leather-bound books, and traditional study decor, while the glass windows allow natural light to catch the polished internal components. The hinged handle permits easy relocation between rooms, maintaining its dual role as a functional timekeeper and a decorative tabletop object. The clean white enamel dial provides high contrast for reading the time at a glance, anchoring the ornate engraved surfaces with simple clarity. Regular placement in a private study, a drawing room, or a hallway highlights the detailed chased decoration and the historic character of the French timepiece.

Developed in the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were portable timepieces created for travellers to keep accurate time on long journeys, housed in sturdy metal frames with carrying handles.

Traditional carriage clocks feature gilt brass or bronze casing, bevelled glass panels on multiple sides, enamelled dials with Roman numerals, and steel mechanical clockwork.

Authentic period examples exhibit heavy gilt brass construction, hand-engraved scrollwork, visible platform escapements through top glass panels, and fine enamel work free from printed graphics.

Position the clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive writing desk, or dark wooden bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes and metallic accent objects.

Dust the brass casing gently with a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip gilding, and have the mechanical escapement lubricated periodically by a qualified horologist.
