Henri Jacot: An Early French Carriage Clock

Description

HENRI JACOT: a particularly fine, early and superb quality French CARRIAGE CLOCK by this famous French maker. The case is of desirable “gorge” design, beautifully engraved all over, including the panel to the top and the iconic ribbed handle. The eight-day movement retains its original platform lever escapement and strikes hours and half-hours on a gong. It also repeats the hours at will via the upper button.

The fine Breguet “moon” hands are original as is the good enamel dial which is inscribed for the retailers: “The Goldsmiths Alliance, Cornhill, London”. The backplate is stamped “HJ” and numbered: 589 whilst a further detailed oval stamp can be found inside the movement ~ see image. 6.5ins high (handle down); 4ins wide; 3.5ins deep. (16.5 x 10 x 9cms). Perfect working order and very highly recommended. circa 1860

A prolific winner of awards at various Expositions in Paris, Jacot has always been known as the makers of truly superb Carriage Clocks. The first Henri (his nephew and successor was similarly named) died in 1868, and according to the excellent research conducted by Leigh Extence, recorded serial numbers start from 387 and continue to a little past 19,000.
