This Georgian long case clock stands as a traditional English country house timepiece from the late eighteenth century, measuring 206 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Constructed from dark brown oak with a warm timber grain, the upright case exhibits an arched hood, hinged side columns, brass corner spandrels, and a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals. The twelve-inch break arch brass dial includes a subsidiary seconds dial, a calendar aperture, and an engraved name boss bearing the inscription John Watts Canterbury. Designed with an eight-day movement that strikes the hours, the architectural structure incorporates classic moulding details around the glazed dial aperture and a left-hinged hood door. This wall or floor standing clock integrates into hallways, reception rooms, or studies as a functional timepiece and decorative antique.

A longcase clock from this period features a tall wooden cabinet enclosing a pendulum and weight-driven movement, typically topped with an arched or flat hood flanking a brass or painted dial.

Cases were predominantly constructed from solid oak, walnut, or mahogany, while movements utilized cast brass dials, steel hands, and silvered chapter rings.

Authentic examples feature hand-engraved lettering, cast spandrels attached to the dial corners, period-correct movement fitments, and natural timber surface oxidation.

Positioning a longcase clock in an entryway, hallway, or dining area provides a strong focal point that bridges historical craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Keep the mechanical movement serviced regularly by a professional horologist, ensure the cabinet sits level on the floor, and apply natural beeswax to the timber periodically.
