Description

This is a Georgian, English, light baluster wine glass dating from the early to mid 18th century, c1740.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the base commensurate with some 250+ years of use.

The glass has a heavy bottomed trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6.3 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a baluster stem consisting of a short shoulder drop knop, and a small basal knop. The stem leads to a conical, folded foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter and displays a rough pontil mark. The glass is 15.5 cm (6.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a tiny white inclusion in the metal of the bowl and some roughness around the top of the shoulder knop where the glass blower fashioned it using his pucellas.

It is made from English lead metal weighing in at 140 g. (~ 5 oz.).

This eighteenth-century English wine glass dates from the Georgian period and is made from clear hand-blown lead crystal. The piece has a heavy-bottomed trumpet-shaped bowl with a plain design, rising from a stem featuring a shoulder knop and a small basal knop. The wide conical foot has a folded edge and a rough pontil mark underneath. Minute inclusions are visible within the metal of the bowl alongside tool marks near the top of the shoulder knop, while the base exhibits age-related wear and tear accumulated over centuries of use. Measuring 15.5 cm high, this glass is suited for display upon a sideboard top within an English country house interior. The clear material and classic balustroid silhouette make it an authentic example of domestic drinking vessels from the period. It integrates seamlessly into traditional table settings or glass collections as a decorative accent.

Georgian balustroid glass refers to mid-eighteenth-century English drinking vessels featuring stems shaped with knops, swelling forms, or balusters derived from classical architecture.

These pieces were hand-blown using heavy lead glass, composed of silica, potash, and lead oxide, resulting in glass with high refractive qualities and weight.

Authentic period stemware features a pontil mark on the underside of the foot, natural air bubbles within the glass matrix, wear marks consistent with age, and a subtle greyish or dark tint.

Displaying antique wine glasses inside a lit glazed cabinet or arranged upon a sideboard top highlights the glass clarity and structural silhouetting.

Wash stemware individually by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, or sudden thermal changes.
