Georgian Jacobite Plain Stem Wine Glass

£350    $468    €410
This is a Georgian, English, plain stem wine glass of probable Jacobite significance dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a rounded bucket-shaped bowl measuring 4.7 cm (1.9 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a border of small swags and tails above a rose bud and a sprig of leaves. The absence of an open rose would suggest that the glass was made after 1967 when James Stuart, The Old Pretender, died. The bowl sits on a plain stem and a conical, folded foot which measures 7.3 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

English lead glass weighing in at 115 g. (~ 4 oz.).
