Firing glasses are 18th-century drinking vessels characterised by their exceptionally thick and heavy feet. The name derives from the loud ringing sound, resembling a musket shot or firing, produced when the glasses were banged on a table after a toast.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy lead crystal, introduced in the late 17th century to improve clarity and durability. They were hand-blown and shaped by skilled glassmakers, often featuring characteristic tool marks, pontil scars on the base, and minor air bubbles within the metal.

Authenticating involves examining the glass under magnification for signs of age such as wear scratches on the foot rim, a rough or polished pontil mark, and the greyish hue typical of early lead glass. The weight, proportions, and consistency of the metal are also key indicators.

Antique drinking vessels can be displayed in illuminated glass-fronted cabinets, used as bud vases for single stems, or styled on open shelving to add historical texture and tactile variety to a contemporary space.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Extreme temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock, and pieces should be dried immediately with a lint-free cloth.
