Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement. They became central timekeeping fixtures in British homes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving in height and cabinet style according to prevailing regional tastes and cabinet-making techniques.

Traditional longcase clocks are constructed using solid timber frames such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing brass or iron mechanical movements with lead or iron weights and a swinging pendulum. Dials are typically crafted from painted iron, brass, or enamel, often featuring hand-painted floral motifs or maker signatures.

Authenticity is assessed by inspecting the movement for hand-tooled marks, examining the timber for period-appropriate patina and construction joints like dovetailing, and checking the dial for authentic aging, hand-lettering, and alignment with the interior movement.

A traditional longcase clock serves as a striking architectural focal point in contemporary spaces, working effectively when placed in an empty corner or hallway to contrast clean modern lines with historic warmth and texture.

Preservation involves keeping the clock away from direct sunlight, dampness, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Mechanical movements require professional servicing and oiling every few years to ensure accurate timekeeping and prevent wear on the metal gears.
