Scottish Mahogany Longcase Clock Signed D. Straiton, Montrose.

19th century
Description

A superb Scottish mahogany longcase clock in excellent, fully serviced working order. The hood has an arch‑top design with turned columns and three brass finials, including a striking central eagle. The painted dial features crisp Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials, and is signed D. Straiton, Montrose. Floral spandrels and a charming river‑and‑castle scene decorate the arch, with finely pierced brass hands completing the dial.

The richly grained mahogany case has a shaped trunk door with its original key, opening to reveal the hand‑painted pendulum. A solid, neatly moulded base gives the clock a confident, architectural presence.

A warm, characterful example by David Straiton of Montrose (active c.1820–1860), known for attractive painted dials and quality Scottish longcase clocks.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish longcase clocks from the Georgian period typically feature rich mahogany casework, often decorated with swan-neck pediments and painted dials illustrating regional landscapes or figurative motifs.

These clocks were constructed using solid and veneered timber such as flame mahogany or oak, housing iron or brass weight-driven movements behind hand-painted sheet iron or brass dials.

Authenticity is indicated by historical maker signatures on the dial face, traditional joinery methods like hand-cut dovetails on the trunk, original weight-driven movements, and period-correct movement mounting boards.

A longcase clock serves as an architectural anchor in entrance halls, stair landings, or formal dining rooms, pairing effectively with both classic panelling and minimalist modern backdrops.

Keep the case in a stable environment away from direct heat sources, dust the exterior with a soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a horologist every five to seven years.
