This mid-19th-century Victorian campaign trunk is made from solid camphor wood displaying a warm brown grain with a rich patina. The rectangular timber box is reinforced with heavy brass corner guards, a recessed rectangular escutcheon plate on the front, a central metal hasp lock, and looped metal side carrying handles mounted on circular backplates. Additional metal strapping binds the vertical seams and edges, while small low feet support the base. The hinged lid secures shut over a flush-fitting top panel marked with a small central inlay. Measuring 34 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, this sturdy travelling trunk functions well as a decorative coffee table in a living room, study, or gentleman's library. Its low profile and durable brass-bound construction provide a practical surface for books or decorative objects while adding historic character to contemporary interiors.

A campaign trunk is a piece of portable storage furniture designed to be packed up and moved by military officers or travellers during overseas expeditions in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Camphor wood was favoured for travel trunks because its natural aromatic oils repelled insects such as moths and termites, protecting clothing and official documents during long maritime voyages.

Authentic period pieces typically feature flush brass corner brackets and inset carrying handles designed to prevent snagging during transport, alongside hand-dovetailed joinery and original lock mechanisms.

These trunks function effectively as distinct coffee tables, end-of-bed storage boxes, or entryway benches, introducing rich timber tones and historical character to modern living spaces.

Keep the trunk away from direct heat sources and radiator vents to prevent timber shrinkage, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain to nourish the wood.
