This small nineteenth-century camphor wood chest originates from the Anglo-Indian campaign tradition, finished in a warm brown timber. The structure is reinforced with original brass corner mounts, flush brass strapping along the edges and lid, a brass keyhole escutcheon on the front, and side carrying handles shaped as drop-rings. Signs of age appear in the gentle surface wear and patina of the wood and metal hardware. The chest measures 38 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Practical for everyday storage, this piece suits placement at the foot of a bed or within a gentleman's library. The compact proportions allow it to function as an occasional table or a blanket box in a bedroom, study, or living room while keeping contents secure under its hinged lid.

A campaign chest is a piece of portable furniture designed to be transported easily by military personnel or travellers during overseas expeditions in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Camphor wood was favoured for nautical and military chests because its natural aromatic oils repelled insects and moths, protecting textiles and documentation during long maritime voyages.

Authentic 19th-century campaign chests feature flush-mounted brass corner mounts, heavy side carrying handles, hand-cut dovetail joints, and characteristic aromatic timber such as camphor or mahogany.

A small campaign chest functions effectively as a distinctive side table, a foot-of-bed storage coffer, or a functional decorative accent in an entryway or home office.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually, while avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
