Camphorwood

is a large evergreen tree that grows up to 20–30 metres tall. The leaves have a glossy, waxy appearance and smell of camphor when crushed. In spring it produces bright green foliage with masses of small white flowers. It produces clusters of black berry-like fruit around 1cm in diameter. It has a pale bark that is very rough and fissured vertically.

Cinnamomum camphora is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign furniture was manufactured to be easily packed and transported by officers on active service overseas during the 18th and 19th centuries. These trunks feature durable joinery, flush brass fittings to prevent snagging during travel, and protective corner mounts.

Camphorwood was highly favoured for maritime and military storage because its naturally aromatic timber effectively repelled insects and moths. Additionally, it is a dense, stable wood resistant to warping under varying climatic conditions.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, flush-mounted brass straps, recessed carrying handles, and original lock plates. Authentic camphorwood pieces retain a distinct natural scent when the interior lid is opened.

A campaign trunk serves as a versatile statement piece, functioning as a low coffee table in a living area or as a blanket box positioned at the foot of a bed. Its warm wood tones and metal hardware add historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood surface. Avoid aggressive chemical polish on the brasswork to preserve the original aged patina and surface oxidisation.
