FAQs

Originating primarily in 19th-century France, these cabinets were designed as functional bedside furniture for affluent homes, often featuring inset marble slabs to provide a durable, water-resistant surface for washing equipment and water jugs before indoor plumbing was widespread.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from solid walnut and walnut veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, brass hardware, and fitted marble tops secured to the wooden carcass.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction markers such as hand-cut dovetailing, vernacular tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, aged patina on the brass fittings, and traditional hand-rubbed french polish finishes.

These versatile pieces can be incorporated into contemporary bedrooms as contrasting bedside tables to add warmth and historic texture, or utilized as accent tables in a living room to anchor modern minimalist decor.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoid placing them in direct sunlight or near heat sources, and clean the marble top using a soft cloth dampened with mild, pH-neutral soap while avoiding acidic substances.
