Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English, double series opaque twist goblet dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a "hammered" tulip-shaped bowl measuring 8.2 cm (3.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is moulded with small olive-shaped depressions to the lower two-thirds. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of seventeen thin enamel "cotton" strands twisted around a central gauze. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.5 cm (7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collector's sticker on the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 380 g. (~ 13 oz.).

Provenance: With Raparee Antiques in 2013, then in The Graham Slater Collection.

Opaque twist glasses date predominantly to the mid-18th century during the Georgian era, characterised by white or coloured enamel glass threads encased within the stem.

These pieces were handcrafted from lead glass using complex glassblowing techniques, combining clear metal for the bowl and foot with drawn twist canes in the stem.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the weight of the lead metal, pontil marks on the underside of the foot, wear consistent with age, and the precise formation of the internal enamel threads.

Displaying antique stemware within illuminated glass cabinets, on open shelving, or as part of a curated tablescape introduces texture, history, and refined elegance to modern spaces.

Historic glass should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, dried with a lint-free cloth, and kept away from extreme temperature fluctuations.
