Jasperware is a type of stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century, characterised by its unglazed matte finish and contrasting white neoclassical reliefs against a coloured body.

Jasperware is crafted from a fine-grained, vitrified stoneware mixed with metallic oxides to achieve various background colours, onto which separately moulded white ceramic reliefs, known sprigs, are applied by hand.

Authentic pieces typically feature crisp, highly detailed hand-applied reliefs, a smooth unglazed surface with a chalk-like feel, and impressed factory marks or potteries ciphers on the base.

These pieces can be used as focal points on mantelpieces, sideboards, or open shelving, pairing their classical blue and white palette with neutral tones and minimalist surroundings to highlight their intricate detailing.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or immersion in water, particularly if the piece has applied metal mounts or porous unglazed surfaces.
