Collectors cabinets, frequently referred to as specimen or entomology cabinets, were traditionally utilised by naturalists and hobbyists during the Victorian era to securely store and display delicate items such as insects, fossils, coins, and shells.

These cabinets were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak for structural stability and aesthetic appeal, often featuring cedar or pine internal drawer linings to protect specimens from pests.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century generally feature traditional joinery techniques such as dovetail joints on the drawers, hand-turned wooden knobs, glass-fronted panel doors, and natural timber ageing consistent with the period.

This type of heritage furniture serves as an effective focal point in a study or library, where the glass door and multiple shallow drawers can be used to display curated collections of minerals, currency, or curiosities.

Maintain the timber by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or fading, applying occasional applications of appropriate beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
