Description

Now for something a bit different: an Augsberg table cabinet. These little cabinets were made in Augsberg in Germany during the 17th century. They have street scenes in marquetry on all of the drawers, usually the carcases are in fruitwood, this is possibly apple wood , with columns in oak. The drawers are pine lined and button knobs are ebony. A very special and interesting piece.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

An Augsburg table cabinet is a portable miniature cabinet traditionally crafted in the German city of Augsburg during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, featuring multiple small drawers and a central cupboard intended for storing valuables and curiosities.

These cabinets were typically constructed from a secondary softwood timber carcass veneered with various hardwoods, featuring intricate inlaid marquetry or intarsia, often incorporating engraved bone, horn, and fruitwoods.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct hand-cut joinery, aged patination on the interior timbers, traditional iron or brass hardware, and construction methods consistent with 16th to 17th-century European cabinetry workshops.

Placed atop a substantial sideboard, console table, or desk, this piece serves as a striking focal point that introduces historical texture, rich timber tones, and artisanal craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the timber and inlay by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the antique surface without causing moisture damage.
