Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain and pottery that originated in the Kaga province of Ishikawa prefecture. The tradition began in the 17th century, experienced a revival during the 19th century known as revived Kutani, and is celebrated for its vibrant palettes and intricate detail.

Kutani pieces are crafted from high-quality local clay and porcelain stone, finished with glossy glazes. They are traditionally decorated using overglaze enamel techniques, characterising pigments such as iron red, green, purple, yellow, and heavy applications of gilded highlights.

Authentic pieces are identified through their characteristic colour palette, finely painted figurative or floral motifs, and often feature hand-written underglaze or overglaze artisan marks on the base. The weight of the porcelain, quality of the brushwork, and age-related wear on the gilding also aid authentication.

These decorative objects work well as focal points on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Their rich tones complement both minimalist spaces where they provide a contrast, and eclectic interiors that embrace cultural artefacts and traditional craftsmanship.

Clean antique ceramics gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using water, abrasive cleaners, or chemical solvents, particularly on pieces with delicate overglaze enamels and gold leaf which can easily rub off.
