Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This decorative 19th-century French walnut display cabinet dates from the Louis XV revival period around 1860. The warm brown timber structure has cavetto mouldings along the top with cast brass foliate mounts, a single glazed shaped door with matching brass mounting, and glazed bow-front sides. The base features floral marquetry decoration, and the interior contains four velvet-lined shelves in a green fabric. The cabinet stands on short cabriole legs with brass sabots. Practical for daily use in a living room, dining room, or hallway, this vitrine provides functional display space for collectibles, glassware, or decorative objects. Measuring 163 cm high by 49 cm depth by 86 cm wide, the freestanding piece integrates well against interior walls while offering clear visibility through its curved glass panels.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France and widely produced throughout the 19th century, vitrines were created as glazed cabinets specifically designed to display porcelain, metalwork, and curiosities while protecting them from dust.

19th-century French vitrines typically feature solid wood frames veneered in fine timber such as walnut or kingwood, fitted with serpentine glass panels, cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts, and hand-cut marquetry inlay.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-fitted joints, cast bronze or brass mounts showing natural oxidisation, hand-cut marquetry veneers, and age-consistent wear to the timber and interior linings.

A French walnut vitrine functions as a statement piece in a hallway, dining area, or drawing room, housing curated ceramics, books, or glassware to balance modern interior finishes.

Dust timber surfaces regularly using a soft microfiber cloth and apply clear beeswax sparingly, taking care to keep polish off the glass panels and gilt-metal mounts.
