Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, which allowed for longer pendulums and heavier weights housed within a tall wooden case.

These timepieces were traditionally constructed using solid timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring hand-carved details, brass or painted dial faces, and intricate mechanical brass gear movements.

Authenticity is determined by examining the joinery, hand-cut brass gears, maker signatures on the dial face, timber ageing characteristics, and the integration of period-appropriate mechanical movements.

A longcase clock serves as a strong vertical focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, pairing well with both traditional architectural features and minimalist modern decor to add architectural weight and historical contrast.

Preservation requires keeping the case away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources such as radiators, alongside professional mechanical servicing every few years to ensure the gear train remains lubricated and functional.
