Description

A superb pair of antique Victorian mahogany bedside chests. They were made in England, and date from around the 1860-1880 period.

The quality is outstanding, they are a great size and have lots of storage space. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, they stand on plinth bases and have lovely turned mahogany handles.

We have had them re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. There is just some normal historical wear here and there beneath the polish.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and is characterised by a revival of historic styles, solid construction in woods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, and a focus on domestic utility and comfort.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, often featuring secondary woods such as pine or oak for drawer linings, complemented by brass hardware and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, natural ageing of the timber, period brass or wood turnings, and construction methods consistent with mid-to-late 19th-century cabinet making.

They can be paired with contemporary minimalist beds or neutral bedding to create a striking contrast, allowing the rich grain and warm tone of the antique timber to act as a focal point.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
