FAQs

Early oak coffers originated in medieval Europe primarily as secure storage units for valuables, documents, and textiles before domestic wardrobes became common.

They were traditionally constructed from cleft or sawn English oak, often utilising a six-board construction joined with wooden pegs, dovetails, or primitive ironwork hinges and lockplates.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate tool marks such as adze or pit-saw striations, hand-wrought iron hardware, genuine age-related timber shrinkage, and traditional pegged joinery without modern fasteners.

An antique oak coffer can be integrated into contemporary spaces by using it as a functional coffee table, a bedroom end-of-bed storage bench, or a statement entryway piece that contrasts against neutral modern walls.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, occasionally treating the timber with traditional microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood without sealing it.
