Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Hand-forged wrought-iron strap hinges: early ironwork secured with clenched rosehead nails.
Six-plank oak construction: thick hand-sawn boards nailed together at rebate joints.
Scratch-moulded lid front: traditional early woodwork along the leading edge.
Bootjack cut-outs on end boards: simple integral feet forming the side standards.
Deep oxidisation and uneven wear: long domestic use across several centuries.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This seventeenth-century six-plank coffer is constructed from solid oak with a dark brown finish and a heavily weathered patina accumulated over centuries of use. The rustic farmhouse piece has a flat rectangular lid, a hand-cut timber body, a central wrought iron lockplate, and bootjack ends that form the feet. Visible signs of age include numerous surface marks, scuffs, bumps, and dents across the wood, alongside original metal hinges securing the lid. Measuring 60 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the sturdy storage chest works practically in a living room, hallway, or bedroom to hold blankets, linen, or personal items while serving as a functional surface or bench seat.

A six-plank coffer is an early form of storage chest constructed from six solid timber boards joined using iron nails or wooden pegs. Popular throughout medieval and 17th-century Britain, these functional objects were designed to store textiles, linens, and household valuables.

17th-century coffers were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak or softwoods like pine, held together with hand-forged iron nails or timber dowels and fitted with wrought-iron hinges and lock plates.

Authentic 17th-century coffers feature irregular hand-cut timber boards, hand-forged ironwork, visible shrinkage around joints, V-shaped bootjack cutouts on the end panels, and a deep, natural patination built up over centuries.

A historical oak coffer functions effectively as a coffee table in a living area, a storage bench in a hallway, or a blanket chest placed at the foot of a bed, introducing historical texture to contemporary interior schemes.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, while avoiding direct proximity to heat sources to prevent wood splitting.
