This early 17th century oak coffer reflects the Jacobean style with its solid construction and traditional English country house aesthetic. The dark brown timber displays a rich patina across the entire surface, complemented by an iron lockplate situated centrally on the frieze. The piece is constructed from oak with wrought iron elements, featuring a panelled front divided into three sections, each decorated with carved lozenge motifs. Above the panels sits an arcaded frieze with lunette carving along the top rail, while scratch mould decorations outline the structural rails. Plank ends terminate in original shaped feet that elevate the body. Measuring 76 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the coffer retains its three original ring hinges and shows clean dry internal boards. In a contemporary home, this traditional storage chest serves well in various living spaces. It functions effectively in a hallway as a place to store blankets, shoes, or seasonal accessories while providing a stable surface for decorative items. Alternatively, it works as a functional storage solution in a bedroom or living room, bringing historic character and practical enclosed storage to the interior. The robust timber build and timeless decorative details allow the coffer to integrate seamlessly with both period properties and eclectic modern interiors.

An early 17th century oak coffer is a timber storage chest constructed during the Jacobean period, typically featuring frame-and-panel joinery and hand-carved decorative motifs such as arcading and geometric lozenges.

These coffers were crafted from solid English oak utilizing peg-jointed mortise and tenon joinery, often fitted with iron hinges, hand-forged lockplates, and carved front panels.

Authentic period coffers exhibit hand-planed surfaces, wooden dowel joinery, slight variations in hand-carved details, and historical oxidisation around iron fittings and timber joints.

A carved oak coffer functions effectively as a hallway storage bench, a low console table, or positioned at the foot of a bed in modern and traditional interior schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually to nourish the oak and prevent timber desiccation.
