This seventeenth-century English country house coffer is an oak storage chest finished in dark brown with visible patination. The three-panel front displays carved diamond lozenges within each panel, complemented by a carved upper frieze rail and raised stile feet. Construction details include plank surfaces joined with pegged frame work and a rectangular hinged top. The dimensions are 72 cm high, 133 cm wide and 50 cm deep. Practical placement includes any living space, bedroom or hallway as an accent table, storage chest or display surface. The robust timber construction and traditional panel layout suit period interiors and eclectic settings alike.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed with frame-and-panel joinery, often decorated with carved geometric patterns, lunettes, or floral motifs. These chests served as primary storage for textiles, household valuables, and linens in early European homes.

Early coffers were constructed from quartersawn European oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery. The frame-and-panel design allowed the timber to expand and contract with humidity changes without splitting the wood.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed surfaces, irregular wooden dowel pegs securing the joints, hand-carved decorative panels, and historical iron wire hinges or staple hinges. Look for signs of age such as natural shrinkage around joinery and deep patination in lower recesses.

An oak coffer functions effectively in an entryway as hallway seating, placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or positioned as a central focal point against a neutral backdrop in a living room.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme changes in relative humidity to prevent timber movement.
