17th century
Description

A good example of an english Oak Coffer dating from the mid to late 17th Century. It has a traditional panelled construction standing on four tall block feet. The front is decorated with an attractive frieze rail of carvings and further carvings in the centre of the front panels. The lid opens on its original ring hinges and it has a small open candle compartment with a planked floor.

The coffer is in good original condition and has developed a beautiful rich patina. There are some signs of age and use, some knocks and marks, some minor shrinkage splits and a couple of old repairs but nothing untoward. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th century oak coffer is a heavy, wooden storage trunk constructed primarily from native oak during the Jacobean, Commonwealth, or Carolean periods. These pieces feature panelled construction, a flat hinged lid, and decorative hand-carved motifs across the front panels.

Coffers from this era were made using joinery techniques rather than iron nails. Frame-and-panel construction was joined with mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs, allowing the timber to expand and contract naturally over time.

Authentic period coffers feature hand-planed surfaces, irregular peg end joinery, and natural wear around the base and keyhole. Original iron wire hinges or loop hinges, along with a deep patina from centuries of wax polish, also indicate genuine age.

An oak coffer serves as a functional focal point in an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed. Pairing the dark timber with neutral upholstery, contemporary artwork, or modern lighting balances the historic weight of the piece within contemporary spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood shrinkage or movement.
