This eighteenth-century small French oak coffer functions as a practical strong box and storage chest in the French provincial style. Made from solid oak with a dark brown timber finish, the piece has a cleated top with a moulded edge, blacksmith-made hinges, and a central wrought iron escutcheon plate. Pegged joinery secures the heavy timber construction, which exhibits visible natural wood grain variation and rustic surface wear consistent with age, alongside subtle cabriole legs supporting the base. Measuring 61 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the proportions suit placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space as an accent table or blanket chest. Internal dividing sections lift out easily, and the iron lock engages automatically upon key removal for secure closure.

A coffer is a wooden storage chest, historically utilised across France during the 18th century to secure valuables, textiles, and household goods.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, featuring mortise-and-tenon joinery and hand-forged wrought iron hardware like lock plates and hinges.

Authentic period pieces exhibit evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces, original wrought iron escutcheon plates, hand-cut joinery, and natural age-related shrinkage along the grain.

A small oak coffer functions effectively as a distinct accent piece, serving as a low side table, entryway storage box, or focal point within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring placement remains away from direct heat sources.
