Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Dial engraved 'Thos Low Dundee': maker recorded working around 1800.
Cast brass spandrels and silvered chapter ring: dial style before painted dials became standard.
Inlaid urn medallions in satinwood: neo-classical cabinet work of the period.
Painted rolling moon disc in the arch: typical late Georgian mechanism.
Hand-pierced steel hands: metalwork consistent with early 19th-century horology.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Scottish moon dial longcase clock dates from the nineteenth century Georgian period and stands 235 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. The case uses dark brown mahogany with satinwood inlaid urn medallions on the long door and base, crossbanded fields, an arched hood, and turned columns flanking the glass door face. The dial incorporates a brass and silvered face with corner spandrels and a painted moon phase disk under the arch, powered by an eight day movement. A key winder is present alongside the pendulum. Traditional placement for such a tall case clock includes a hallway, landing, study, or living room where it functions as a working timepiece and decorative antique feature. The timber displays warm polished reddish-brown grain patterns across the rectangular trunk and square plinth base, accented by lighter contrasting oval floral urn inlays.

FAQs

A moon dial longcase clock incorporates a revolving disk above the primary dial that tracks the 29.5-day lunar cycle alongside standard timekeeping. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these horological pieces were particularly functional in rural areas for predicting night illumination.

Traditional longcase clocks feature cases crafted from woods such as flame mahogany, oak, or walnut, often enhanced with marquetry, stringing, or crossbanding. The interior mechanisms are constructed from cast brass and iron weight-driven components.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-cut brass or hand-painted dial plates, weight-driven pendulum movements, and period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails. Dial signatures, corner spandrel details, and moon phase mechanisms also assist in authenticating age and regional origin.

A longcase clock serves as a strong architectural focal point when positioned in a hallway alcove, entrance foyer, or formal reception room. Pairing the dark mahogany casing with neutral wall tones balances its vertical scale within contemporary decorative schemes.

Position the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or veneer lifting. The movement requires periodic professional lubrication, and the wooden case should be dusted with a microfibre cloth and treated with high-grade beeswax.
