How do I wind a chiming mantel clock?

Start by opening the front bezel to access the dial. Most have three winding squares. The centre square drives the time, the right side operates the quarter chimes, and the left powers the hour strike. Insert the key and turn it slowly. Most antique German clocks wind clockwise, but stop immediately if you feel resistance. Keep track of how many turns it takes. A standard eight-day movement usually requires about fourteen half-turns.

I inherited a heavy wooden wall clock that seems to run fast no matter what I do, how can I adjust the timekeeping so it is accurate?

Look at the bottom of the pendulum bob. You will find a small rating nut on the threaded rod. Turn this nut to lower the bob slightly. Lengthening the pendulum slows the swing down, which corrects a clock that runs too fast. Make small adjustments. A single turn can alter the timing by a minute a day, so wait a few days between changes.

Why does my clock strike the wrong hour?

The strike train has likely fallen out of sync with the hands. This happens when the hands are moved backwards past the hour. Move the minute hand forward to the next hour and count the strikes. Gently push the hour hand on its friction fit to point to the number you just heard.
