Why are so many sold as pairs?

Pairs are normal here in a way they aren't in most furniture categories. Around a quarter of titles announce two pieces rather than one. The driver is French bedside cabinets, made and bought for either side of a bed. Dealers name matched pairs in the title, so it is treated as worth stating.

What does Vernis Martin actually mean on a listing?

It describes a French painted and varnished finish, and in this category it nearly always means a vitrine with polychrome painted panels. It is the one proper term the trade uses here, and the spelling wanders: Vernis, Verne, Verni and Vernes all appear. Kingwood veneer, ormolu mounts and a marble top often come with it.

How old are most painted cabinets?

The dated field runs from 1750 to 1960, with a sampled Antwerp table cabinet given as before 1700 at one end and mahogany corner cabinets dated 1960 at the other. The weight sits between roughly 1880 and 1930. The 18th century is a thin tail.

Are Victorian and Edwardian labels precise dates?

No. They are dealer shorthand for a span. '19th Century' alone accounts for 87 entries, which is a hundred-year bracket. Only two thirds of listings carry a clean year at all, so a good deal of the category is bracketed rather than pinned.

What painted pine turns up besides bedroom furniture?

Country and kitchen pieces: cupboards, corner cupboards, dressers, food cupboards and wall cabinets. Regional attributions are named with unusual precision, with Devon, Cornwall's Tamar Valley, the West Country and Wales all appearing. There is also a trade sub-population. Shop counters, drapers' and haberdashers' fittings, sign-written stationers' cupboards and chemists' drawer banks, one running to 37 drawers.

Do particular makers dominate this category?

No. Names don't drive it. Painted cabinets are handled broadly rather than cornered by a few specialists. Around 37 are listed a year on Sellingantiques, and 112 different dealers have handled one, which is close to every general furniture dealer touching the category occasionally.
