Introduction

Antique Collectors Cabinets

The form that dominates is the drawered specimen chest in mahogany. Mahogany appears in 258 titles, and "drawer" or "drawers" in nearly half of them, because the count is the measure: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 30, 40. Twelve and twenty drawer cabinets recur more than any others.

Purpose-built cabinets of shallow drawers were made from the eighteenth century on to house private natural-history and antiquarian collections, where dust exclusion and uniform shallow depth mattered more than volume. The form multiplied through the nineteenth century as natural history became a widespread middle-class pursuit and specialist London suppliers worked to standard patterns.

Sizes run from a six-drawer table-top box to floor-standing banks of forty, fifty-six and seventy-two, sometimes raised on a stand. Alongside the specimen chest the heading carries glazed display cabinets, vitrines and bijouterie cases, countertop and shop cases, and trade drawer banks - filing, apothecary, chemist, dentist, haberdashery - pressed into collectors' service. Display pieces make up a larger share of current stock than of the archive.

Dates in the record run 1790 to 1960, with 345 of 559 listings giving a clean year. The weight sits late Victorian to Edwardian, the 1890s alone accounting for 79. A large block is looser, giving a reign or a century: "19th Century" 74, "Victorian" 63, "Edwardian" 23. Georgian, Regency and 17th-century entries appear only in ones and twos, along with continental cabinets on stands - Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish, Antwerp, German and Japanned.

What sets them apart

Top And Bottom

Drawer count does most of the work. Six- and eight-drawer cabinets, commonly stained deal, pine or satin walnut of about 1900, sit at the bottom of the sampled range. Thirty, thirty-six, forty, fifty-six and seventy-two drawer banks sit at the top, the largest recorded being a seventy-two drawer microscope slide cabinet.

Timber sorts the middle. Solid mahogany and Honduras mahogany cluster high; stained and polished deal, often with mahogany drawer fronts on a softwood carcase, clusters low. Burr walnut, figured veneers, amboyna and satinwood turn up at the upper end, as do marquetry and inlay on the continental cabinets on stands.

Then there is what the title can prove. A named trade supplier lifts a cabinet above an unattributed one of the same drawer count, and so does stated provenance - Cambridge University geology and museum cabinets, a British Museum source, cabinets attributed to named nineteenth-century naturalists. Cabinets still holding their collections push upward too: two hundred tropical insects, British moths, fossils, butterflies and beetles, one case of 280 microscope slides.

Questions people ask

Antique Collectors Cabinets: Frequently Asked Questions

How many drawers do these cabinets usually have?

Counts in the archive run from five to seventy-two, and twelve and twenty drawer cabinets recur more than any others.

The title almost always leads with the number, so it is the first thing you read. Six- and eight-drawer table-top cabinets sit at one end, floor-standing banks of forty, fifty-six, sixty and seventy-two at the other.

What were collectors cabinets made to hold?

Insects above all: entomological is the commonest stated purpose among named specimen cabinets. Eggs, coins, medals, microscope slides and minerals follow.

The stated uses read like a survey of Victorian collecting. Oological, geological, fossil, shell, butterfly, moth and jewellery cabinets all appear by name in the titles.

Which timbers turn up most?

Mahogany, in 258 titles, with solid mahogany named in 25 and Honduras mahogany in 16.

Stained and polished deal is the other constant, in 24 titles, frequently with mahogany drawer fronts on a softwood carcase. Burr walnut, figured veneers, amboyna and satinwood appear at the upper end of the range.

Are collectors cabinets a common find?

Around 43 are listed a year on Sellingantiques, and 124 different dealers have handled one.

That spread means it is a form almost every furniture dealer meets sooner or later rather than a specialism.

Do cabinets ever come with the collection inside?

Occasionally. Sampled titles record cabinets sold with two hundred tropical insects, a collection of British moths, and fossils, butterflies and beetles.

One case came with 280 microscope slides. Cabinets still holding their contents sit higher in the range than empty ones.

Can you find matching pairs?

Yes, more often than you might expect. Nineteen titles offer a pair.

Among them are matched pairs of sixteen-drawer and twelve-drawer specimen cabinets.
