Late 19th Century Dark-green Pebble-grained Leather 3-Section Writing Box

19th century
Description

A superb late 19th century dark-green pebble-grained leather 3-section Writing Box by famous maker W&J Milne, 126 Princes Street, Edinburgh.

Opening the Bramah lock, the lid opens to reveal two leather writing surfaces. The upper surface lifts to reveal a stationery section fully equipped with a leather notepad, ivory tools and other implements (Ivory exemption certificate: P87CEWAF applies). There are two inkwells, pen and stamp storage sections plus three document sections.

The lower writing surface opens to reveal further document storage and a blue-ribbon criss-cross for notes. The maker’s name is gilt embossed both inside and, on the back, outside.

The box appears hardly used; the leather appears untouched inside. The lid bears the initials ‘JSM’ gilt embossed below the gilded brass carry handle. Original Bramah key.

Dimensions:   H: 5.5 inches (14cm). W: 12 inches (30.5cm). D: 9.3 inches (23.5cm)

Maker:  The firm W&J Milne of 126 Princes Street, Edinburgh (traded between 1844-c.1905) were celebrated ‘Box-Makers’ utilising exotic woods, fine leather, patented locks and ivory. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
