Charming 19th Century Decorative Papier Mâché Sewing Cabinet and Contents

Description

A charming and decorative Papier Mâché Sewing Cabinet, with two decorated front doors and six internal drawers containing a large and varied collection of sewing paraphernalia. There are hand-painted and mosaic shell-decorated panels to the front doors, top and both sides. Furthermore, the splayed base is decorated with mosaic shell chips and gold paint.

The lid is hand-painted with a ramparted house and adjacent boathouse on either a shoreline or riverbank. There are tiny pieces of MOP (mother-of-pearl) missing, but paintwork and most of the mosaic work is generally good.

The black lacquered papier mâché case is in excellent condition. Each of the two outside side panels feature hand-painted and MOP floral scenes.
