Magnificent Marquetry Inlaid Mahogany Stationery / Writing Box C.1880

Description

A stunning English mahogany stationery or letter box dating to the late Victorian era, around 1880.

The curved lid and the front are both inlaid with the most exquisite marquetry inlay in the form of floral and foliate garland finished each end with a ribbon and bow design, most elegant.

The interior is unbelievably clean and beautifully kept with the original blue silk taffeta remaining intact inside the lid. The compartments too are in excellent condition, these were left untouched rather than damage to remove the lock to produce a key, hence this box doesn't have a key.

A real beauty which would adorn the finest of desk-tops. The footprint measures 10 1/2" x 5 3/4", the box standing 8" high at rear.
