Description

Offered for sale is a carved English oak Bible box which I can confidently date to the late 19th century thanks to the carved design on the top of the lid! This box would have been used to store and keep safe Bibles as the name suggests, or other items of high regard and value.

The date 1895 sits proudly in relief amongst curling oaken ribbons which have an almost Celtic Knotwork feel to them. The background to the carving has a stippled effect, which really makes the design stand out clearly and boldly.

All four sides and the top are intricately carved with just the underside left smooth. On the inside the box is plain and without compartments, there are two copper hooks to the lid and one side where a chain might be fitted and two newer brass hinges replace the originals. There is a key present, but this doesn't appear to still lock.

The box is in lovely condition and has a rich warm patina with beautiful grain shining through. It measures 20cm high, 38cm wide and 24cm deep.
