Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1860s.
The box is made from exotic Rosewood with the lid having a central panel of Tumbling Block parquetry surrounded by a floral and foliate mosaic border, similar to the one running around the centre of the box. The front has a diamond shaped Ivory escutcheon housing the working key.
During the 1830's James Burrows developed the tessellated mosaic technique which became the most well known type of Tunbridge Ware.
The interior retains it's original rich purple silk (at one time I think used for a pen box with a few ink stains).
Spectacular condition without loss and a wonderful polished patina. 10 1/2" x 4" x 3 1/2" tall.
