Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma Province in southern Kyushu, Japan, and gained international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912) when pieces were exported in large quantities to Western exhibitions.

Satsuma ware is characterised by a distinctive ivory-coloured, crackled earthenware body, meticulously decorated with overglaze enamels and raised gold gilding.

Authentic pieces typically feature a fine, spider-web craquelure in the clear glaze, intricate hand-painted polychrome motifs, and often a Shimazu family mon or artist signature on the base.

Place the vase as a statement centrepiece on a plain wooden console or mantelpiece to allow its rich gilding and intricate floral details to contrast with minimalist surroundings.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid using water or chemical cleaning agents due to the fragile nature of the historic overglaze enamels and crackled glaze, and keep out of direct sunlight.
