Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 1920s, industrial shelving was engineered primarily for commercial, agricultural, or laboratory utility, prioritising structural durability and high load-bearing capacity over ornamentation. These pieces featured robust metal frames combined with non-porous, heavy-duty surfaces such as slate or hard wood.

Construction typically combined heavy-gauge wrought or cast iron with natural stone slabs like slate, which provided an impervious, flame-resistant, and easily sanitised surface suitable for industrial and shopfitting environments.

Authentic examples feature heavy riveted or bolted iron joinery, natural surface wear and oxidisation on the metal, and hand-cut slate slabs displaying characteristic edge flaking, mineral veins, and honest age-related patination.

A large slate shelving unit functions effectively as an architectural focal point or open room divider in open-plan spaces, creating structural contrast when placed against plain plaster walls or paired with organic timber elements.

Slate surfaces should be cleaned with neutral stone soap and preserved with thin coats of mineral oil, while the metal framework requires routine dusting and occasional application of clear microcrystalline wax to prevent rust progression.
