Antique English Papier Mache Playing Card / Games Box C.1880

Description

A most attractive English playing card or games box made from Paper Mache and beautifully painted to appear like Burr Walnut wood, enhanced by a nice glossy patina.

The domed top is mounted with gilded brass strapping mounted with Ivory and the front is mounted with a brass escutcheon housing the tasselled working key.

The interior is refreshing with the interior being totally untouched with the original paper covering and the card lifts intact with red ribbon to aid in the retrieval of the playing cards. I have added two decks of (modern) playing cards purely to complete the box. The central lidded compartment houses four large dice.

Excellent condition without loss to the paper mache, a few areas of wear to the Ivory mounts and minor discolouration to the gilded brass, all mentioned purely for accuracy. 8" x 5" x 3" tall.
