A Good Victorian Brass Bound Coromandel-wood Jewellery Box, C.1860

19th century
Description

A good high-quality Victorian brass-bound coromandel-wood Jewellery Case, with hidden drawer and bramah lock (complete with working key).

The box itself is in very good condition with all its brass edging intact. Highly polished and showing off the grain of this beautiful wood to its absolute best. There is a small brass shield-shaped cartouche to the top of the lid with an armorial coat of arms, possibly a dragon. Open the lid to reveal a superb blue leather gilt-tooled interior, comprising nine compartments of varying sizes, two lined in blue velvet. There is a small silver-topped ink-bottle in one compartment, a nice addition but not original to this case.

Inside the lid is a blue ruched-silk panel, with a hidden press-release button inside the lid. Once depressed, the gilt-tooled blue-velvet panel pulls out and reverses to reveal a good sized vanity mirror. This can be reversed and clicks back into the lid. Behind the mirror, within the lid is a blue-leather letter pocket, hinged from the bottom, for storage of letters and other papers away from prying eyes.

To the back of the interior is a small brass press-button. Push this button down to release the spring-loaded 'hidden-drawer' which springs out to the front of the box, underneath the lock. The drawer is lined in finest blue velvet with further gilt-tooled and highly decorated compartments for jewels, one of which lifts out to reveal further blue-leather lined storage underneath.

Dimensions: Width: 12.25 inches. Depth: 9 inches. Height: 6.25 inches (31 x 23 x 16 cm)

Dated: c.1860-1870.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
