Circa 1800 Rare Georgian Burr Yew Wood Tea Caddy with Ebony and Boxwood Stringing.

Description

Rare burr yew wood circa 1800 George III period rectangular two division tea caddy. Yew is a beautiful and very desirable wood, most sought after and unusual to find.

The caddy has ebony edge trim on all sides and lid and a boxwood band on the interior lid edge. The interior is divided into two lidded caddy sections, with the lift off lids having ivory pulls. The original paper lines the lid.

Tea caddy boxes were used to store and mix black and green tea. Tea was an expensive commodity during this period, and would need to have been kept in a locked box to keep it away from the house staff.

An ivory escutcheon completes the design.

Size-7.5 inches long by 4.5 inches wide by 4 5/8 inches high.

Weight-580 grams.

A very elegant Georgian tea caddy in rare burr yew wood, with lovely warm colour and patina, and contrasting burr grain.

In very good condition, it would be an asset to a collection, and a lovely piece to use or display on a desk or table.
