A Fine Quality 19th Century Chinese Carved Red and Black Lacquer Box

This superb quality late 19th century Chinese carved lacquer box is unusual as the colours are in reverse to what is often seen. The red lacquer has been used as the ground colour and the black has been overlaid and used for the decorative carving. The top panel is most magnificent it is carved with a five clawed dragon amongst stylised clouds and is beautifully detailed in the black and red lacquer. The box is of a simple form with a lift off lid. The edges of the box are more traditionally carved with leafy scrolls and peony flower heads. This fine piece is in excellent condition circa 1880
