A four glass clock is a type of mantel clock encased in a rectangular brass frame with glass panels on all four sides, allowing a full view of the internal mechanism and pendulum from multiple angles, popularised in France during the late 19th century.

These clocks typically feature a heavy gilt-brass or ormolu case fitted with bevelled plate glass panels, often accompanied by enamelled dials and intricate champleve or cloisonne enamel details, housing a spring-driven mechanical movement.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century usually display numbered brass clockwork movements, hand-painted enamel dials, mercury or compensated pendulums, and precise cast-brass construction rather than modern lightweight alloys.

This item functions effectively as a focal point on a mantelpiece or a side table, where its transparent glass panels can reflect light and complement both traditional and eclectic modern interiors.

Preservation involves keeping the movement clean and lubricated by a professional horologist every few years, avoiding direct sunlight to protect enamel dials, and handling the delicate glass and brass casing with care.
