Early Victorian of Pearl Inlaid Rosewood Letter Box - Answered / Unanswered

Description

It's been a long time since I have had a decorative pearl inlaid example of one of these correspondence boxes; these are my favourite one's as they are the earliest of of their kind dating to around 1840 / 1850 still with a very typical William IV design.

Made from exotic Rosewood, expensive in it's day, the top is skillfully inlaid with Mother of Pearl shell with it's attractive iridescent quality. There are two slots in the lid for letters either " Answered " and " Unanswered ".

There is a complimentary Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the front which houses the taselled working key.

The interior is lined in a red paper covering with a wooden divider to keep the letters in their correct place.

Excellent condition, measuring 9" x 4" x 4 1/4" tall.
