Shaun King Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.

The BOX has a beautifully chased Brass Handle and a BRAMAH LOCK (no key) which is stamped J. DYUS.
The bottom section of the BOX is used for storing documents and also has a card and letter holder. On the opposite side are two, white panels on which to write notes. It is above these where the Owner's Name, George A. King, is stamped.
Remarkably, some of the stationery is printed with the original owner's monogram GAK.

In the well beneath is a removable pen tray, the COMBS PATENT INK WELL and matching COMBS PATENT LIGHT. Both are complete with Inkwell in one, and Vesta and Matches in the other.
Beneath the Pen Tray is a section holding pen nibs, 2 A W Faber Erasers and the original Printer's Die for the monogrammed stationery. There are also two, old South American Coins - a 10 Centavos from Peru (1880) and 20 Cents from Chile. Presumably these were kept for sentimental reasons and may well relate to the gilt inscription "Un Recuerdo" (a souvenir). Being part of its history it would be nice if they were kept with the Box.

This Writing Box has been well looked after both by Mr. George King, the original owner, and whoever else has enjoyed owning it over the past 150 years. To have retained so much of its original contents makes this quite a rarity.
In original, unrestored condition.
