A Good Tunbridgeware Walnut Writing Box with Inlaid Decoration

Description

A good mid/late 19th century Tunbridge-ware walnut writing box with inlaid boxwood, kingwood, tulipwood and mother-of-pearl decoration. The highly polished locking lid opens to reveal the green baize interior together with a pen and ink division, with two inkwells, a lidded compartment for stamps and nibs etc and a press-and-open pen tray with further storage underneath.

The lower baize section opens, by use of the decorative brass clips, to reveal a paper storage area. Unlock and open the top baize section to reveal further paper storage and a secret panel which, when triggered by the concealed mechanism, opens to reveal three further small 'secret' drawers for stamps, sovereigns and other treasures. The secret panel is triggered by lifting the right-most division of the pen/ink section.

The front is decorated with further boxwood and tulipwood stringing, typical Tunbridge-ware diamond decoration to the edging and a diamond shaped mother-of-pearl key escutcheon.

Complete with two working keys.
